Back in August I was lucky enough to go on a Crochet Retreat for the weekend and apart from having an entire weekend to crochet I also got to meet the incredibly sweet and talented Louise Walker from Sincerely Louise. At just 24 Louise has taken the world of faux taxidermy by storm and I fell in love with the Faux T Rex Head kit she sells the minute I saw it. I thought I would share my thoughts on this pattern and kit with you.
The kit arrived as above (minus the head already knitted of course) but the yarn and the packaging was exactly how its photographed. You also get the needles, stuffing, eyes and felt for those scary teeth.
Knitting it up didn’t take long at all! Although I would agree with Louise its more of an intermediate level but if you are really comfortable with the knit and purl stitch then I think this is a fun challenge for you. You will learn lots of pattern reading and how to knit up bobbles and use knit and purl in the same row. I found that having the chart as well as the written pattern to refer to was very useful.
Don’t be alarmed when you’re finished knitting and the top part of his head looks more alligator-like rather than T-Rex-like because once you have sewn the top and bottom parts together and stuffed him, his whole entire face takes shape. Then you add teeth and it brings him to life.
The kit came with a very generous amount of stuffing, enough yarn to knit him up, and have some left over to sew the head onto the pre drilled MDF mount. There is literally nothing more you need to buy to make this prehistoric fella! Priced at £37.99 I think this is really reasonable.
I loved it and would give this 10 out of 10. It took me about a week to knit up, doing a bit each night. A very quick and satisfying knit and I would highly recommend this to anyone who is dinosaur obsessed. Sincerely Louise also does purple or red Triceratops Head for dino obsessed girls!
Louise was at the Knitting & Stitch Show in Alexandra Palace last month and I got to see all her knits “in real life”. I was really keen to get another kit, but it’s very hard to choose between them all. In the end I bought the Bear Pillow kit to knit up as my son really loves the book ‘We’re going on a Bear Hunt” so I thought it would make a lovely Christmas present for him. The pillow isn’t on sale yet in her Etsy shop but I am sure it will be very soon (can you see it in the top left hand corner – its queued up in the to-do pile of projects to be completed BEFORE Christmas!).

Louise’s T Rex Head made it into The Guardian last month! A super talented young lady to keep your eye on.
Have you ever tried a big knit or if crochet? I would love to hear more and see some photos.
