Macrame Gnome Steps
Get your rope ready. Instead of folding each cord in half like you typically do for Macrame Square Knots, fold it at the 160cm mark. This means the 2 centre cords are approx 40cm long and the remaining part of the cord will be much a longer length (160cm) and will be the outer cord.
Make the Hat
Make approx 22 to 24 square knots using the length of the rope.
I use masking tape to keep the rope stuck to the table.
Use the handout provided to guide you on how to make square knots. Or visit YouTube and search for "Square Knots Macrame" there are lots of good tutorials online too.
Then fold it so it forms a hat. I like to start at the bottom when I am folding it back and forth to make the hat its easier to shape.
Grab your needle and thread provided, and thread the needle all the up the centre of the hat; starting at the bottom of the hat, so that it secures the hat folds and keeps it together. Make sure to leave enough thread at the top of the hat so it can hang from a tree and enough thread at the bottom so you can add the bead.
To get the bead threaded onto the rope, I taped the end of the thread tightly by twisting it so I could thread it through the hole of the wooden bead very easily. I then knotted the cord at the hole of the bead, so the bead stayed in place.
The Beard
Glue the pre cut rope at the back of the gnome hat, folding each length in half like the example below, and glueing it down at the half way fold.
Keep glueing the white rope across the hat and your Gnome beard will start to take shape.
I like to unravel each length of rope so its a little wavy (see the image below) and then trim the beard so its all the same length. I also cut away the cord from the bead - I added some glue in the hole of the bead as extra safety so it didn't fall off.
Hang it your tree and show off your creation with pride!
