Family Learn to Knit | Learn How to Knit London

About this class

Knitting used to get handed down through families like a good recipe. Granny taught Mum, Mum taught you… and then somewhere along the line, someone dropped a stitch (sorry). This session is about picking it back up again, with grown-ups and kids learning side by side at our family knitting class in London.

In this two-hour beginners class you'll learn all the basics: how to cast on, knit stitch and how to cast off at the end. We start everyone on garter stitch because it's just knit stitch, row after row. That's why small hands pick up the rhythm quickly, and why grown-ups who swear they're all thumbs get there too. Don't be too surprised if the children get there first. You won't knit a whole scarf in one session (that takes a little longer), but you'll go home knowing how to start one and finish it.

Everyone takes home their own kit of knitting needles, yarn and a 'how to' guide, so nobody has to share and the practice can carry on round the kitchen table. Fair warning, though: once there are two knitters in the house, it tends to turn into a race. Then a rematch. Then a row over who gets the last of the red wool.

Each person learning needs their own ticket, so a parent or carer and one child is two tickets.
